METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods for removing chewing gum from concrete usually depends on the gum’s age and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the chewing gum was left not long ago and it hasn’t penetrated the surface, we might be able to remove it by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping it off with a putty knife.

The ice forces the gum to freeze into a workable substance compared to a warm and stringy glob. Once that happens, we slide a putty knife or scraper right under the gum residue. Then we move the scraper very slowly under the gum and the entire piece should peel right off the concrete.

The above method is only possible with gum that is brand new.

When we remove gum that is already black, or is already smashed down into the concrete surface, we use a hot water power washer with the heat turned up to 200 Degrees in order to melt the chewing gum. For this type of gum removal, we will not use very high pressure because that will sometimes ruin the surface of the concrete!

Our crew never uses more pressure than needed to safely clean concrete. These types of surfaces can be damaged much easier than most people think, especially if they’re only a few years old. Concrete can take up to 100 years to cure. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our chewing gum removal service.
